<p>Russell Crowe learned a stark lesson in history playing Adolf Hitler's right-hand man, Hermann Göring in "Nuremberg."</p>
<p>Speaking at the Oct. 24 AFI Fest premiere of the post-World War II drama, Oscar-winner Crowe, 61, said that people today can be just as morally depraved as they were in Nazi Germany, or in other dark historical times.</p>
<p>"We like to look back at our history, 3,000 or 1,000 years ago, and remark at how bestial we used to be," Crowe said Friday. "Right now, folks, the number of border skirmishes or active wars going around the globe is larger than it's ever been. So we're still bestial."</p>

<p>Crowe said a telling line in "Nuremberg," which opens in theaters nationwide Friday, still sticks with him.</p>
<p>"The last quote in the film is, 'If you want to know what man can do, you have to look at what man has done,'" he said.</p>
<p>Written and directed by James Vanderbilt, the courtroom drama follows Army psychiatrist Douglas Kelley (Rami Malek), who interviews top Nazi officials – including Göring (Russell Crowe) – to determine whether they are mentally fit to stand trial at the November 1945 Nuremberg Trials.</p>
<p>During the interrogations, Kelley determines that Göring and his fellow Nazi leaders were not historical aberrations, but ordinary people who had descended a dark moral path – one that even seemingly upright, war-victorious Americans might be capable of following.</p>
<p>"Nuremberg" is based on Jack El-Hai's 2013 nonfiction book "The Nazi and the Psychiatrist," which chronicles the chilling cat-and-mouse psychological game between Göring and Kelley before the high-stakes trial begins in front of a world TV audience.</p>

<p>Oscar-winner Malek, 44, said that he was "confounded" at first trying to play a character who "at times empathizes with the Nazis, or perhaps is perceived to be empathizing with the Nazis."</p>
<p>"We have to remind ourselves that this can happen at any moment or any time," Malek said of the Nazi atrocities, which led to World War II and the death of 6 million Jews in concentration camps. "Who knows what will happen? This is the 80th anniversary of the Nuremberg Trial."</p>
<p>Malek was interrupted by an audience member who shouted out, "It is happening. It's happening now."</p>
