<p>The federal government shutdown on Wednesday as lawmakers were unable to reach an agreement on a spending budget. Here are answers to a few of the most common weather related questions we're seeing.</p>
<p>Is the National Weather Service shutting down?</p>
<p>No. Weather forecasting will continue uninterrupted by the shutdown. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service (NWS) provide essential services for protecting life and property, and will remain operational.</p>
<p>But I saw on social media that one of my favorite weather feeds is shutting down. Is that true?</p>
<p>Yes. Though the NWS and NOAA will continue their life-saving essential work, many feeds and other public-facing services will be shuttered. The National Hurricane Center will continue to provide updates that protect life and safety, while other informational accounts will cease during the shutdown.</p>
<p>What does the federal shutdown mean for weather-related emergencies?</p>
<p>The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is expected to continue assistance in case of a disaster or emergency, but that doesn't mean that they will be fully operational.</p>
<p>A notice on their website currently reads, "Due to the lapse in federal funding, portions of this website may not be and some non-disaster assistance transactions submitted via the website may not be processed or responded to until after appropriations are enacted."</p>
<p>Can I still travel to my favorite national park to enjoy the weather?</p>
<p>The Department of the Interior has announced that a plan is in place to "keep national parks open, ensure permitting and other efforts related to American Energy Dominance are continued, as well as keeping our law enforcement and wildfire units active."</p>
<p>That said, according to a widely-circulated contingency plan, staffing is expected to be severely reduced in many locations which may cause some closures. It would be wise to check with the park before making travel plans during the shutdown.</p>
