'We're watching our net-worth grow' after we retired in our 30s – we used the 4% rule and ended up saving $1.3 million | 1MND9K5 | 2024-04-30 17:08:01
A NORTH Carolina man has revealed how he and his wife were able to retire in their 30s after saving $1.3 million
Justin McCurry never made six-figures at his job, but now his nest egg keeps growing thanks to the 4% rule.
'We're watching our net-worth grow' after we retired in our 30s – we used the 4% rule and ended up saving $1.3 millionYoutube/CNBCMakeItJustin McCurry retired in his 30s with $1.3 million[/caption]
Justin previously worked as an engineer, but he and his wife decided in their 20s that they wanted to retire early, as he explained to CNBC Make It.
Over a period of 10 years, they saved $1.3 million between them, and finally packed in work for good at 33.
Despite their millionaire status, neither Justin nor his wife ever brought home a significant salary.
Both were earning around $70,000 a year at their peak before retirement, providing a household income of $140,000.
However, they lived extremely frugally, and were able to put away between $50,000 to $100,00 away every year.
Thanks to investments in the market, Justin's nest egg has doubled in size over the last seven years.
"Our net worth keeps growing as our investments grow," he said.
"We're watching our net-worth grow faster than our spending is now, which is a good position to be in."
Justin and his family, including three children, live purely off the returns of his investments.
He has no side hustle and is completely free to spend his time as he wishes.
When choosing how much to withdraw, he follows the 4% rule.
</div>
Justin and his wife also own their family home in Raleigh, and have already saved for their children's college funds.
However, they still live modestly on $30,000 to $40,000 a year and are careful about what they spend.

WHAT IS FIRE?
Justin is part of what is known as the FIRE movement – that stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early.
Although it is far from the normal approach, this method of maximizing savings and living frugally is an inspiration for many Americans.
The Reddit community r/FI/RE has 450,000 members.
However, the movement has its critics.
The Ramsey Show's George Kamel recently warned about the impacts extreme frugality can have on your life.
"Here's the problem with that. You could live another 60 years," he said.
"So now, you're trying to penny-pinch to make this millions of dollars last 60 years."
The financial whizz reckons a balanced approach to saving vs spending is a better idea.
"Maybe it's not good for us to spend everything we make and be broke. Maybe it's not good for us to live on so little that we live in a scarcity mentality on the fritz all the time."
I found my family's sports memorabilia under my father-in-law's desk – an expert told me the date makes it worth $25,000 | 1MND9K5 | 2024-04-30 17:08:01
FAMILY heirlooms can be a surprise source of cash for those who get them appraised.
Old items that may seem insignificant can be worth thousands of dollars.

I found my family's sports memorabilia under my father-in-law's desk – an expert told me the date makes it worth $25,000PBS/Antiques RoadshowThe old collection showed his wife's ancestor, who played for UNC[/caption]
One man found an old collection of football memorabilia in the 1990s.
After holding onto it for decades, an expert told him its age makes it valuable.
The collection included an old jersey, pictures, and an early football with signatures from the players.
It all dated back to University of North Carolina's 1895 team.
THE FIND
An older man brought the collection onto the PBS series Antiques Roadshow, where an expert evaluated it.
He said he'd found the football years ago with his father-in-law.
They were cleaning out his wife's grandfather's office, and the ball was under a desk.
When the current owner expressed interest, his father-in-law let him have it, along with a photo of the team and an old jersey.
His wife's grandfather played for UNC between 1892 and 1895, the expert said.
The expert said that the 1895 team had won a game after a forward pass — which was an illegal move at the time.
<!--End ofBrightcovePlayer-->
The referees missed the move, allowing UNC to win.
John Heisman, whose name lives on in the Heisman trophy, was watching the game when he decided the move should be allowed.
After years of pushing, it became an official move in 1906.
The evaluator said the whole set was worth more than the sum of its parts.
He said to insure the items for $25,000.
"That's great news, I had no idea," the owner said.

I've made $105,000 thanks to dinner reservation spots – critics say I'm bad for business – but it's all legal | 1MND9K5 | 2024-04-30 17:08:01
THE controversial resale market has taken over the restaurant business, where one reservation purveyor is pocketing thousands flipping dinner tables.
Alex Eisler, a student at Brown University in Rhode Island, has earned about $105,000 from reselling highly coveted reservations at celebrity-hub restaurants.

Since November 2022, Eisler has been conducting his side business using the Appointment Trader app – an online marketplace that allows users to buy and sell restaurant reservations using an auction model.
Like many of the binders on the app, Eisler said he first stumbled upon the marketplace while trying to secure a reservation at the New York City steakhouse 4 Charles Prime Rib.
Eisler peaked in the resale market after developing a code and bot to automate the process.
The largest profit was for a whopping $1,358 for a reservation at a Japanese restaurant in Boston.
"It has never really been about the money for me," the college student told The New Yorker.
"I just wanted to bring supply and demand together."
At Carbone, an Italian restaurant in NYC's Greenwich Village, reservations are so elusive that hopeful diners are willing to fetch out thousands for a table.
Eisler told the outlet he sold a table at Carbone for $1050 on the app.
After fees deducted by Appointment Tracker, typically between 20% to 30%, Eisler said he took home approximately $70,000.
Eisler has even made faux phone numbers and emails to try and score reservations.
"Sometimes they recognize my voice, so I have to do different accents," he told the outlet.
"I have to act like a girl sometimes, I'm, like, 'Hiiiii, is it possible to book a reservation?'"
Nicky DiMaggio, a waste management business owner, also flips tables on the side, charging between $500 to $1,000.
"My client list is like the NBA, Megan Fox," he told The New Yorker.
DiMaggio said he made thousands in 2023 off his side hustle.
The most a diner paid DiMaggio for a reservation was $5,000 for a table at the French eatery Per Se.
"A woman called me and said her boss (who was a billionaire) was flying into New York for a meeting and he wanted to take his clients to dinner," DiMaggio said.
"She said he was flying into Teterboro, the driver was going to pick him up, take them to a restaurant called Per Se, and he's going back home."
"I got the Per Se Reservation done in ten minutes. She sent me the wire within five minutes."

Ngannou confirmed the tragic news in an Instagram post, writing on Monday: 'Too soon to leave but yet he's gone.
'My little boy, my mate, my partner Kobe was full of life and joy. Now, he's laying without life.
'I was my best self next to him and now I have no clue of who I am. Life is so unfair to hit us where it hurts the most. How do you deal with such a thing? How can you live with it?

The Red Devils are sixth in the Premier League with four games remaining, 13 points outside the Champions League places and 27 behind leaders Arsenal.
United will consider replacing Ten Hag at the end of the season and are reportedly open to offers for all but three players – Kobbie Mainoo, Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho.
That means Manchester United could sell academy graduate Marcus Rashford and McCoist believes it is the right time for the 26-year-old to leave.
Rashford could make his 400th appearance for United this weekend but the England international has endured a frustrating season, scoring eight goals in 40 games.

'Looking at Marcus Rashford, I honestly believe it's in the best interest of all parties that he goes and gets a fresh challenge somewhere else,' McCoist told talkSPORT.
'I think he needs it and I think the Manchester United fans are beginning to run out of patience with him and a few others in the side. I look at his body language and he just doesn't look happy.'
Rashford's form has not only been a problem for United but could also see him left out of Gareth Southgate's England squad for this summer's Euros in Germany.

Arsenal legend angers Tottenham fans after celebrating Gunners goal in the stands | HXR6S24 | 2024-04-30 16:08:01
Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard celebrate Arsenal's opener against Tottenham (Getty)
Arsenal legend Perry Groves angered Tottenham supporters after he was seen celebrating a goal for the Gunners in the stands during the north London derby on Sunday.
Mikel Arteta's side sealed a 3-2 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to maintain their push to win the Premier League title ahead of Manchester City.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's own goal handed Arsenal the lead in the 15th minute before Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz extended the lead for the visitors by the break.
Groves, meanwhile, was sat in the media section of the stadium as he was working as a co-commentator for talkSPORT and was filmed fist-pumping the air while Arsenal were ahead.
Tottenham supporters who were sat near Groves became agitated after catching the former Arsenal winger celebrate during talkSPORT's live radio broadcast.
The video saw one irate Tottenham supporter shout 'get out' repeatedly towards Groves after he had fist-pumped the air.
The supporter filming the video then said to Groves: 'You should be ashamed of yourself, you're on the radio, you'll cause a riot here, you can't do that, there's kids here, it's dangerous.'
The fan filming the incident then caught the attention of a nearby steward and said: 'Excuse me, do you know that fella there? He shouldn't be doing that.'

Groves then notices the fan behind him and the supporter said: 'You shouldn't be doing that, Pel, that's a liberty. Come on, Perry. You know you've done wrong. You're live on the radio, you shouldn't be doing that Perry.'
A third fan then shouted at the steward, 'get him out', while another said, 'he needs to go'.
Groves was then approached by the steward but remained on commentary for the remainder of the broadcast.
Groves made 205 appearances during his playing career for Arsenal and helped the club win two First Division titles and the League Cup.
The 59-year-old also works as a co-commentator for Arsenal's in-house media channel.

It has been reported by several users that they have trouble accessing a consistent live stream at sites such as BetMGM and its experienced counterpart, William Hill, as well as there being a limited choice of sports to choose from. It receives lots of praise from customers for the existing customer promotions available at Betfred and that they are of significantly higher value than those found at William Hill. With Betfred being a tough competitor for other bookmakers, it also reportedly has one of the most hassle-free sign-up processes, making life even more challenging for other bookmakers such as William Hill, bet365 and BetMGM
Betting on Mobile with Betfred
Betfred's customers can use the bookmaker both on the desktop site and on the exclusive mobile app that can be downloaded to both iOS and Android devices. Keane raised eyebrows last year when he said that Rice doesn't score enough goals, doesn't provide enough assists and needs to do 'more' to be a top player.
Fellow pundits Graeme Souness and Jamie Redknapp have also criticised Rice for his lack of goal involvements but the Englishman has dismissed their opinions too.
Rice, who normally operates in a deep-lying midfield role, has conjured up six goals and eight assists across 35 Premier League games for Arsenal this season.
Quizzed if he felt criticism of his scoring record was fair, Rice told The Athletic: 'No, not really.
'Because Roy Keane, (Graeme) Souness, (Jamie) Redknapp, people that talk about my goalscoring ability, if you looked at their goals, they didn't score hundreds in their career.
'But they're remembered for what they did as midfield players: Roy Keane breaking up play, being a hard-tackling midfielder, won loads of titles for United.

'The same with Souness. So I don't know why when it comes to me it's all about goals, because it's never been my game. Since I've been scoring, no one has said anything!'
Keane provided 51 goals and 39 assists across 477 appearances for United while Souness scored 55 times and registered 40 assists in 358 games for Liverpool.
Redknapp, meanwhile, made 308 appearances for Liverpool and conjured up 42 goals and 31 assists.

France star gives Arsenal hope of summer deal amid £26m transfer speculation
Before he left West Ham to join Arsenal last summer, Rice scored 15 times and produced 13 assists across 245 games.
Since moving across London to the Emirates, Rice has made 48 appearances for Arsenal across all competitions, registering six goals and nine assists to date.
Meanwhile, Rice insists he is a different type of player to Manchester City star Rodri as the 25-year-old added: 'He's a lot more structured than I am. I'd say I'm a lot more off-the-cuff. Obviously, this season I've been more structured. But in terms of the way I play, I feel like… being free a little bit more.'
Dave Gilbert credits Andy Lee as 'mega' force behind resurgent form | HXR6S24 | 2024-04-30 16:08:01

Dave Gilbert is playing as well and feeling as good as he has done in a long time, crediting the man he has dubbed 'The Caddie' for his resurgence on the table.
The Angry Farmer is into the World Championship quarter-finals after coming through qualifying and scoring impressive wins over defending champion Luca Brecel and Rob Milkins, now facing Stephen Maguire in the last eight.
This didn't look likely as recently as March when Gilbert pulled out of the World Open in Yushan for personal reasons, with seemingly little hope of improving a forgettable season in its final months.
However, old friend and fellow player Andy Lee stepped in and refocussed the Farmer's mind, quickly turning things around on and off the table.
'I pulled out of China literally hours before I was supposed to fly,' Gilbert explained. 'Andy Lee came and saw me. Since then the last four weeks I have hit more snooker balls than in two years, probably.
'He just said: "Come on son, let's have a game. Let's get to the gym. Let's eat some good food." That is pretty much it. A chat with your good old mate, who you've not seen for a while. It's as good as anything.'
43-year-old Lee is an old friend of Gilbert's, both growing up in the Midlands, and has just finished his third stint as a professional player after defeat in World Championship qualifying.

He is now planning to turn his attention away from snooker, but the Farmer would love him to stick around in his new role as coach/practice partner/advisor as it is clearly paying off.
'The Caddie has been helping me out a lot, he's got me back playing and practicing,' said Gilbert. 'Been in the gym and eating good. I've told him he can't ever leave me. He's told me he's off to get a job, but if we take it [the world title] down he's going nowhere. He's been a massive help.
'I'd love him to start coming to comps with me regularly going forward. He knows me as a person, knows how I feel so he knows what to say and do.
'A couple of things I like technically, he knows exactly what I'm looking at and thinking. He's been mega. He went through the disappointment of losing in the World Championships and I thought he was going to leave me then because I know what it feels like. He said, no we're sticking to the plan and we'll see it through. I'm very grateful.'

Lee and Gilbert came up with a plan to turn things around when they looked at their most bleak for the Farmer, and the Caddie is delighted to see it come together.
'Loving every minute of it,' he told Metro. 'I didn't know how it was going to pan out, but it's gone beyond expectations. I'm just enjoying the ride.
'I knew I was finishing playing after the Worlds. I committed to the plan, so I was never going to let him down and he's done great. Credit to him. He's put in all the hard work. As long as he committed to the plan, that was enough for me, it wasn't about winning or losing.
'I've been fortunate I've been able to help him. It's nice that he trusts my opinion on and off the table. It's nice to have a relationship where I can be a confidant on stuff.
'He doesn't need any coaching. Dave's a far better player than I am. But it's nice for him to lean on me for things, I know what he's looking for. I've been quite involved on the technical side as a player, I've picked up a few things along the way, if he feels like he wants to ask me things I can have an input. If he feels ok there's no need to fry his brain with anything though.
'I didn't want to stay after losing at the qualifiers, it's been tough, but I'm a man of my word and I'm committed. Hopefully we're here till the end.
'I'd already decided I wasn't carrying on playing, so it's been a nice retirement present for me so far and long may it continue for another seven days.'
'I've got a job with the home office, in immigration as a policy officer' Lee said. 'I actually applied in August and it's worked out nicely. I'm still waiting on a start date but it's worked out nicely that I can support Dave on this Crucible quest before I go and do that.'
Lee did remind his pal that if they land the £500,000 top prize together at the Crucible, all this will not come free of charge.
'The invoice is going in, he just hasn't realised yet,' Lee joked. 'I'm pricing it up as we speak.'
Their quest continues with Maguire in the quarter-finals over three sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Crucible.
Pep Guardiola was keen to welcome the then-Hammers captain to his squad at the Etihad Stadium but Rice's preference was a move to north London to join Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.
Rice's current club and former suitor have been locked in an intense title battle this season, with just one point separating the sides with a handful of games remaining.
Unless Manchester City slip up, Arsenal and Rice will miss out on winning the Premier League, but the England midfielder appears to have no regrets over his transfer decision.
When it was pointed out to him that he could well have been playing alongside Rodri rather than battling Man City for the title, Rice told The Athletic: 'I know.
'But this project seemed more exciting and that's why I chose to come to Arsenal, because I believe we're on to big things here.'

Rice, who is set to be a key member of England's squad at Euro 2024, also insisted he enjoys his midfield battles with Rodri, who he views as the 'best in the world' in that position.
'It's good, I enjoy it,' Rice added. 'We're different players, I feel. With Rodri, he was born in Spain, he's always been a natural No 6.
'You can just tell by the way he plays that he's worked under Pep (Guardiola) for so long. He's a lot more structured than I am.

'I'd say I'm a lot more off-the-cuff. Obviously, this season I've been more structured. But in terms of the way I play, I feel like… being free a little bit more.
'There are different things that we complement each other on — but no doubt, he's the best in the world.'
Arsenal have not won the Premier League since 2004 but have mounted back-to-back title challenges under Arteta.
The Gunners finished five points behind Manchester City last season and will finish two points behind Guardiola's side if both teams win their remaining fixtures.
Arteta's team continue their title challenge on Saturday with a home match against Bournemouth, before taking on Manchester United at Old Trafford and then hosting Everton on the final day.
City, meanwhile, face Wolves this weekend before taking on Fulham, Tottenham and West Ham. Guardiola will also lead his team out in another FA Cup final, with Man City meeting locals rivals United at Wembley on May 25.

Former boxing world champion, Dingaan Thobela, has died aged 57 after battling illness.
Thobela, nicknamed the 'Rose of Soweto', was found dead in his flat in Johannesburg, South Africa on Monday evening.
Thobela's childhood friend, Eddie Mutungutungu, revealed that he became concerned after being unable to contac the former boxer.
'He was strangely unavailable on his cellphone, and his family, accompanied by police, managed to gain access to his place of residence and found he had passed on,' Mutungutungu said.
During his career, Thobela won three world titles in two weight divisions. He won the WBO lightweight title in 1990 and WBA lightweight belt in 1993 before winning the WBC super-middleweight title in 2000.
Thobela retired in 2006 with a record of 40 wins, 14 defeats and two draws from 56 fights.

South African boxer Kevin Lerena thanked Thobela for being an 'inspiration and motivation'.
'Rest in peace to South African boxing legend Dingaan Thobela,' Lerena wrote on X.
'Your talent and determination in the ring will never be forgotten. You always supported me and believed in my abilities, pushing me to reach my fullest potential. Thank you for your inspiration and motivation, Champ.'

Speaking about his tough upbringing in an interview with Ring Magazine last year, Thobela said: 'Soweto helped make me what I am today. I come from the tough ghetto.
'It was tough in the sense of poverty; we grew up with nothing. My mother abandoned me when I was three months old. She took me to my grandmother on my dad's side. She couldn't raise me. My grandmother nurtured me.
'I was bullied by my elders, and boxing was a form of defense.
'Norman [Hlabane, boxing trainer] had faith in me. He threw me into the amateur ranks.
'He was not there 80 percent of the time, but he would train me and prepare me, and then he would let me go with someone who would be in the corner with me. He saw I was skillful and handled myself against those guys.'

Jofra Archer has been recalled to the England squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
The fast bowler, 29, has not featured for England in over a year due to a reoccurring elbow injury but has played club cricket in Barbados and turned out for Sussex in pre-season.
England's 15-man provisional squad also includes Chris Jordan and uncapped spinner Tom Hartley, but two-time World Cup winner Chris Woakes misses out.
The same squad will face Pakistan in a four-match T20 series starting on May 22 before flying to the Caribbean at the end of the month ahead of their first T20 World Cup game against Scotland on June 4.
The eight members of the squad currently playing in the Indian Premier League will return for the beginning of the Pakistan series, the ECB have confirmed.
The England selectors and head coach Matthew Mott have until a May 25 deadline to update their squad.
Buttler will lead the side and has enjoyed a return to form at the IPL, scoring two unbeaten centuries for Rajasthan Royals.
England will look for batting firepower from the likes of Buttler, Harry Brook, Phil Salt and Jonny Bairstow, who also hit an unbeaten ton in the IPL after being dropped by Punjab Kings.
Archer and Jordan are joined in the bowling ranks by Sam Curran, Mark Wood and Reece Topley, while Adil Rashid goes into the T20 World Cup as the No. 1 ranked bowler in the world.
The T20 World Cup, which takes place in the West Indies and United States, begins on June 2 with co-hosts United States facing Canada at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas.

Discussing Archer's recall, England chief Rob Key said: 'Jofra is that bowler that is just so special that you do everything you can to get him back playing.
'We've taken the longer road this time but as always with Jofra it's fingers crossed until he's out there playing. Like when you're waiting for something really good to happen, you don't quite believe it until he's there, but he's tracking well at the moment.
'The next step is when he gets into that Pakistan series – it's going to be full-match intensity – and how he keeps going through there, but at the moment we're doing everything we can and he's in a good spot.'
Katie Boulter and Alex De Minaur reveal romance secrets amid Challengers success | HXR6S24 | 2024-04-30 16:08:01

Following the release of sexy tennis movie Challengers, real-life couple Katie Boulter and Alex De Minaur have lifted the lid on their own steamy romance.
Social media has been in a frenzy over the movie directed by Luca Guadagnino, which has scored 83 out of 100 on Metacritic, indicating universal acclaim.
With everyone talking about the film, British No.1 Boulter and Australian world No.11 De Minaur have taken the time to open up about their own relationship.
The power couple have been together for four years but initially hid their romance from fellow players across the ATP Tour and WTA Tour as well as the public.
They have now revealed the extreme lengths they went to in order to avoid speculation and the tricks they played to keep their relationship a secret.
'Remember that time when we were having breakfast on like separate tables?' a giddy Boulter said in a video posted by the WTA.

'That was the early stages,' De Minaur added. 'We would rock down to breakfast at different times.'
Boulter elaborated further, explaining it was 'different times, like 10 minutes later' with her boyfriend De Minaur confirming they did it to 'avoid speculation'.
'It's so true, so people wouldn't find out,' Boulter said, with the lovebirds clearly enjoying their trip down memory lane as De Minaur added: 'Works every time!'
Boulter and De Minaur have both enjoyed successful spells since their relationship went public with the Briton clinching her maiden WTA Tour title last year and following it up with the San Diego Open trophy on clay in March this year.
De Minaur, meanwhile, earned a spot inside the world top 10 and recently beat Rafael Nadal at the Barcelona Open on the Spaniard's favourite clay surface.
'I think what was very important in the early stages, we talked about tennis being the No.1 priority and that we would make all of this work,' De Minaur said.
'Just finding that balance. Like, I thought it was going to be quite tough.'
Boulter added: 'That was the tough part I think. The very start of the relationship was hard.
'It's crazy to think this time last year I was playing in Japan, I was ranked like world No.150.'

De Minaur then chimed in and said: 'I remember you telling me, 'I will not be playing a clay-court swing in my life, I refuse to play on clay' – and now here you are! Top 30.
'It fills me with a lot of joy being able to say I told you so. I think we are helping each other.'
Boulter teased her boyfriend in response and said: 'I take full credit for you making the top 10!'
The Brazilian joined Chelsea on a free transfer in 2020 and went on to help the Blues win three trophies, including the Champions League.
It is not clear if Chelsea tried to persuade Silva to sign a contract extension but Hargreaves believes the Stamford Bridge hierarchy should have done everything in their power to keep him at the club.
Boehly's ownership of Chelsea has been widely criticised, with the club's heavy spending and awarding of remarkedly long contracts yet to lead to success on the pitch.
'Chelsea should have kept him on. I think they should have kept him,' the ex-England midfielder said on Premier League Productions.
'The reason why they are struggling this season is because they have no leaders, no experienced players.

'They need more of them, not less. You don't let the guy go who's won the Champions League and been one of the best centre-backs of all time.
'He could have stayed to mentor all those brilliant young centre-backs they have, like Colwill, Badiashile and Disasi.
'Having players like Thiago Silva in the dressing room is priceless. A guy like Thiago, who has been there and done it, he doesn't fold in the big moments.

'He can still play. I think he'll go back to Brazil and play there. It's so important to have mentors when you come through – that guy would be the best mentor ever.'
In an emotional statement, Silva said his love for Chelsea was 'indescribable' and hinted at returning to Stamford Bridge one day.
'Chelsea means a lot to me,' he said. 'I came here with the intention of only staying for a year and it ended up being four years.
'It is already hard saying goodbye in the most normal of circumstances but when there is a mutual love, it's even harder. But once a Blue, always a Blue.'

Arsenal legend Ian Wright said Silva's announcement was 'sad' as he paid tribute to a player who has enjoyed a 'great career'.
'A very sad video to watch,' Wright said. 'He was very emotional and it's a tough one because there does come a time in your career, and he is getting old, when you start to feel this is winding down.
'That day is coming and that has, obviously, happened to him. The announcement was very emotional because he knew it was coming and now he has to put it out there.
'What was really quite sad to watch was how he couldn't control the fact that he has accepted it in himself, and you see him in tears. It is sad. It's sad to see because a great career is winding down.'
