Masters 2026: After Rory McIlroy’s spectacular win, what’s the best storyline this year?

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Rory McIlroy, sporting the green jacket he’d owned for less than an hour, looked out at the assembled media on April 13, 2025, and smiled a weary smile. “I'd like to start this press conference with a question myself,” he said. “What are we all going to talk about next year?”

Yahoo Sports

It’s a fair question. When McIlroy finally won another major, finally won his Masters in try No. 17, finally claimed his career grand slam, it didn’t just represent the culmination of his career. That glorious 2025 victory represented the end of a chapter in Masters history, the best possible conclusion to one of the tournament’s longest-running storylines. With McIlroy’s victory assured, with Tiger Woods now clearly a part of the tournament’s history rather than its present or future, the Masters needs new storylines.

So. Whatarewe going to talk about this year?

Fortunately, Augusta National has a way of creating myths out of the thick Georgia air. No matter what unfolds over the next six days, it will take on the tones and colors of legend.

Broadly speaking, the best Masters stories break down into three categories: ascension, domination and resurrection. In other words: a new champion, an elite champion, or a returning champion. Every one of the finest Masters — 2025, 2019, 1997, 1986 and so on — features some combination of the three. So which will it be this year? Here are our best guesses.

Ascension: Greatness debuts

Augusta National has a way of welcoming future Hall of Famers to the big stage, like Woods and Jordan Spieth. With all due respect to literally every other tournament, there’s something special about a Masters win that elevates a player’s career to another level entirely. Any of these paths would make for a fantastic week:

First-time major winners:Tommy Fleetwood leads the pack here; if the Englishman can claim his first major this week, he’d be one of the golf world’s most popular winners in years. Akshay Bhatia also appears ready to level up. Min Woo Lee, Max Homa and Viktor Hovland would also be crowd favorites if they were atop the leaderboard on Sunday.

First-time Masters winners:Justin Rose really deserves another shot at this, having lost two Masters in playoffs (to Sergio Garcia in 2017 and McIlroy last year). Shane Lowry might set off the finest party Augusta has ever seen. And if Gary Woodland managed to win a green jacket after his personal challenges, there wouldn’t be a dry eye on the grounds.

An amateur:No amateur has ever won the Masters; Ken Venturi came the closest, finishing solo second to Jack Burke in 1956. Sam Burns made a run in 2023 but finished T16. Were any of this year’s six amateurs to get in the weekend mix, they’d be an instant national celebrity.

Domination: Greatness flexes its muscle

Every once in a while, the best have to remind the world why they’re the best. Yes, dramatic 18th-hole playoff finishes are spectacular, but so too is the walk up the 18th fairway when the champion only needs a triple-bogey to win.

Rory McIlroy:If he were to back up his 2025 nailbiter with a 2026 masterpiece, well, that would be something, wouldn’t it?

Jon Rahm:Just how good is Rahm these days? It’s tough to say because his days are on the LIV circuit, but if the 2023 champion were to come to Augusta National and lap the field, well, a whole lot of the “did he make a mistake?” talk would quiet down.

Scottie Scheffler:Won his two Masters by three and four strokes, respectively. When he finds his groove, there’s nobody that can even slow him down.

Bryson DeChambeau:Also fits in the “First-time Masters winners” category, but man, if DeChambeau were able to back up his talk with a triumphant walk through the pines, well, we’d like to see the YouTube behind-the-scenes videos that would come from that.

Resurrection: Greatness, once lost, is now found

The Masters has a way of bringing greats back onstage for one more turn in the spotlight — think Jack Nicklaus in 1986 or Tiger Woods in 2019. These players are primed for one of those return-to-greatness moments.

Jordan Spieth:The next player in line for a truly great comeback story. After winning a Masters in 2015 and giving one away in 2016, Spieth seemed like the next legend. It hasn’t quite worked out that way, but if he were able to find that winning form for one more weekend, he’d be the most popular contender in the field.

Keegan Bradley:He has just one major to his credit, a PGA Championship all the way back in 2011 … meaning the most notable line on his resume is last year’s catastrophic Ryder Cup captaincy. A green jacket would go a long way toward rehabilitating that.

Brooks Koepka:After spending several seasons on LIV, Koepka has largely been welcomed back by the PGA Tour galleries. He too belongs in the “first-time Masters winners” category, but a Koepka post-LIV victory would have resonance beyond just the leaderboard.

Sergio Garcia & Patrick Reed:Both have severely tested their fans’ patience over the years, but a victory might —might— eliminate some of the hard feelings.

Fred Couples:No, it won’t happen. But man, can you imagine how great another Freddie win would be?

Of course, the best result might just be one where we have no idea what’s going to happen all the way into late Sunday afternoon. Think back to, say, 2011, when eight different players held at least a share of the lead on the tournament’s final day, five simultaneously on the back nine. Charl Schwartzel claimed the green jacket with four straight closing birdies, but it remains one of the most spectacular Masters tournaments ever because of the sheer chaos.

We don’t yet know what the story of this week will be. But it’ll definitely be worth retelling. At Augusta National, a victory always is.

Kevin Durant, Rockets spoil Stephen Curry's return from injury, beat Warriors 117-116

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Alperen Sengun made the go-ahead layup with 11 seconds left on a pass from Kevin Durant and the Houston Rockets held offStephen Curry in his returnafter being sidelined more than two months for a 117-116 victory Sunday night.

Curry missed a long, straightaway 3-pointer in the final seconds.

Gary Payton II scored the go-ahead basket on a goaltend by Amen Thompson with 20 seconds left, but Durant took charge on the other end. He finished with 31 points, eight rebounds and eight assists against his former team, making a crucial 3-pointer with 2:10 remaining.

But he missed with 38 seconds left, and Draymond Green found a cutting Payton in the key.

Curry dazzled down the stretch to score 29 points on 11-for-21 shooting in 26 minutes after missing 27 straight games because of a right knee injury — his first action since Jan. 30 against Detroit.

Curry's driving layup made it a one-point game with 1:27 left then Sengun converted a three-point play moments later only for Curry to hit a 3 on the other end.

Curry entered to a warm standing ovationand greetings on the big screen — he also expressed his gratitude on video — when he entered with 4:54 left in the opening quarter. It marked the first time he has come off the bench in a regular-season game since March 7, 2012, against Memphis. He last was a reserve in Game 4 of the first round of the 2022 playoffs during the Warriors' last championship run.

Things briefly got heated midway through the second quarter when Green and Jabari Smith Jr. exchanged words and had to be separated. Smith wound up with 23 points and nine rebounds while Sengun added 24 points and Thompson 18 and seven assists.

Curry andyounger brother Sethplayed together for the first time when Stephen re-entered the game at the 6:19 mark of the second quarter, the first time two brothers have been together in Warriors franchise history, according to Elias.

Seth Curry appeared in six preseason games for Golden State in 2013 then played for the team's G League Santa Cruz Warriors that year — with the brothers playing all of 100 seconds together during the fourth quarter of two games during that '13 preseason.

The injury could take close to a month to heal, but "returning to sports before the injury is fully healed can cause more severe injuries."

Injury-riddled Lakers lose to Mavericks

Playing without Doncic and Austin Reaves —who has an oblique injury— the Lakers were defeated by the Dallas Mavericks,134-128, on April 5.

LeBron James finished with a team-high 30 points as the Lakers continue to march toward the postseason without the services of two of their key contributors.

The Mavericks were led by rookie Cooper Flagg, who scored 45 points in Dallas' victory.

Reaves' injury is expected to keep him sidelined for four to six weeks.

SNL Mocks Pam Bondi & Kristi Noem Getting Fired in Cold Open

Saturday Night Live (SNL)got fresh fodder to mock as President Donald Trump recently firedPam BondiandKristi Noem. Instead of its usual Trump-led cold open, the April 4 episode went in a different direction. SNL used a sports parody to speak about the headlines.

Pam Bondi and Kristi Noem mocked in SNL cold open

The cold open on SNL was framed as an NCAA Final Four post-game show. Kenan Thompson, playing NBA legend Charles Barkley, wentoff-script to comment on current events. That includedthe firing ofPam Bondi as attorney general. "As attorney general, Pam Bondi was, and I don't say this often, terrible," Thompson's Barkley quipped. "It is a shame when somebody gets fired, but we should all be glad that that freckle-chested dragon lady is gone," he added.

Ashley Padilla then appeared as Bondi, making a dramatic rebuttal filled with exaggerated humor. "The truth is, I was amazing at my job, and I am proud to say I made history as the first woman ever to be fired as attorney general," she said. "I shattered that glass exit door!" Then the character quickly broke down, adding, "They threw my headshot in the trash like it was the Epstein files!" This was a reference to one of the most politically sensitive scandals during Bondi's 14-month tenure.

Donald Trump announced Bondi's removal on Truth Social, stating she would "transition" to the private sector. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, Trump's former criminal defense lawyer, was named acting attorney general.

The sketch also briefly mocked former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, whom Trump fired on March 5. Thompson's Barkley referenced an unverified Daily Mail report about Noem's husband, joking that he "looks like he's starring in 'Big Momma's House 4.'" Noem's firing followed a dispute reportedly over a $220 million Homeland Security advertising campaign that prominently featured her. Her tenure had already been marred due to immigration enforcement policies and public backlash.

It's a boy! Scottie Scheffler arrives at Masters with 9-day-old son and a game he hopes is ready

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Two-time Masters champion Scottie Scheffler arrived at Augusta National on Sunday, and he brought the whole family with him. All four of them.

Masters Golf

Scheffler, who tends to keep his golf separate from his home life, had not shared any information sincewithdrawing from the Houston Open two weeks agobecause of the impending birth of his second child. He said wife Meredith gave birth to a boy on March 27. They named him Remy.

"We just liked it," Scheffler said about the name. His first son, Bennett, was born in 2024 before the PGA Championship. "We didn't have very many good boy names, to be honest with you."

There he was, in a stroller Meredith was pushing under the famous oak tree by the clubhouse, 9 days old and already at his first Masters.

It added to the sights rarely seen anywhere else on the Sunday before a major. That holds true with so much about the Masters.

Defending champion Rory McIlroy has been at the club all weekend, watching theAugusta National Women's Amateuron Saturday and handing out trophies to a group of boys in the annual Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals on Sunday.

McIlroy has talked about how much he looked forward to returning as the Masters champion and enjoying all the perks that go with it. He was in his green jacket during the Drive, Chip and Putt, and posed with Maria Jose Marin, the ANWA winner and first Colombian to join the roll call of Augusta National winners.

Then he headed out to the golf course with his father, Gerry, and Augusta member Jimmy Dunne. Next up is the Masters Club dinner Tuesday andthe elaborate menuhe has put together.

"It is the most exclusive dinner club in all of sport, and I think we should all feel very fortunate that we are there," he told Golf Channel after his part in the trophy presentation Sunday. "But we're there because of the hard work and the good play that we've been able to produce."

He also mentioned two players who won't be at the dinner — Tiger Woods, arrested and briefly jailed for suspicion of driving under the influence during aMarch 27 car crash, and Phil Mickelson, who is tending to a personal health matter at home.

"Unfortunately, there will be a couple of guys that won't be in that room, which is a shame, but I want to make sure that they're acknowledged as well," McIlroy said. "They've been two of the greatest champions that the Masters has ever seen. But it's going to be a really cool night. I can't wait. I hope everyone enjoys the dinner and enjoys everything that I've selected."

Bryson DeChambeau also was at Augusta National on Saturday for the end of the ANWA, consoling Asterisk Talley after the 17-year-old hit two shots into Rae's Creek for a quadruple-bogey 7 on the par-3 12th hole that cost her a chance to win.

DeChambeau grew up about 45 minutes away from where Talley lives in the central valley of California. They know each other well.

"Obviously, I've had difficult moments in my career, and if there's anything I can do to support her, that's what I'm here for. That's why I'm here to support," DeChambeau told reporters Saturday.

He teed off Sunday by himself after the DC&P was over, walking to slap hands and pose for photos with kids and spectators some 100 yards down the right side of the tee. "I've got to go play," he told them before running to catch up with his caddie. There are exceptions for running at Augusta National.

Also there was Gary Player, the three-time Masters champion who will be hitting the honorary tee shot on Thursday. The Black Night was on the putting green as the Boys 7-9 division was preparing for its putting competition on the 18th green.

There was 8-year-old Landyn Kelly from Henderson, Nevada, rapping 40-foot putts toward the hole with 90-year-old Player watching with amazement.

"What a touch! What a touch he has, man!" Player exclaimed.

Scheffler took this Sunday to play with Blake Smith, his longtime manager, who had never played Augusta National. Scheffler and McIlroy are fighting some history this week. Adam Scott in 2013 is the last player to win the Masters after having three weeks off.

"I've been practicing," Scheffler said. "I've been able to do a good amount at home."
